“Endeavour, come in. Are you reading this? Endeavour, do you copy?”
Stephen Klisiewicz watched as Katherine Stano, grunting in frustration, held her communicator as though considering whether to fling it away or perhaps attempt to crush it with her bare hands. Instead, she snapped closed the unit’s cover and returned it to the hip pocket of her green coveralls.
“Comm’s still jammed,” she said, then closed her eyes and shook her head. “But, you probably knew that already.” Releasing an exasperated sigh, Stano began pacing the length of the small room that now served as a temporary hiding place for her, Klisiewicz, and Lieutenant Ivan Tomkins as well as Ensign Anissa Cole. Klisiwiecz sat on the edge of the bare metal bunk, next to where the young science officer lay unconscious. Another bunk was mounted atop hers, with two more bolted to the opposite bulkhead of what he had guessed to be some sort of crew or passenger berthing compartment. There was no bedding, nor anything stored in the tiny lockers set into the compartment’s rear wall. Indeed, there was nothing to indicate the room had ever been occupied.
The team had found this place thanks to Tomkins, who had guided them through the bowels of the ship using a copy of the technical schematics he had managed to download to his tricorder after accessing the alien vessel’s computer. The room offered a few advantages, namely that it was far away from the chamber they had escaped, and according to Tomkins was well away from what looked to be vital or possibly well-traveled areas of the ship.
It also has a door that locks, Klisiewicz mused, grateful for the respite, even if it was only for a short while. Though he prided himself on staying in excellent physical condition in accordance with Starfleet regulations, carrying the stunned Ensign Cole through the dizzying, unfamiliar passageways and past uncounted doorways and intersections while running from possible pursuit had begun to wear on him. The hiding place, no matter its size or level of comfort, was a welcome haven, for however long it lasted. Of course, even as Klisiewicz pondered that thought, his gaze drifted to the door, and he wondered when it might slide aside to admit Gaulke or someone else from the boarding party who now was compromised by the mysterious Lrondi.
Way to ruin a good thing, Lieutenant.
Stano only needed five paces to walk the length of the cramped room before she was forced to turn around. “Either we find a way to get around the jamming,” she said after a moment, “or else we figure out how to use this ship’s communications system, assuming it has one.”
“Whichever way we go,” replied Tomkins, “we’re going to have to move from here to someplace with access to the computer or other onboard systems.” He held up his tricorder. “But there may be a problem with that. According to my scans, there’s been an increase in power being routed to that chamber with all the sleeping people. I think they’re waking up those people, at least some of them.
